Percent Shrub (2.33 GB)

The proportion of shrub canopy in each 30m pixel.

Shrub is a continuous field component encompassing all shrub species discriminated by the presence of woody stems and < 6-m in height.

Percent Sagebrush (1.64 GB)
The proportion of sagebrush canopy in each 30m pixel.

Sagebrush is a continuous field component encompassing almost all species of Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) including Big Sagebrush (A tridentata spp.), Low Sagebrush (A arbuscular), Black Sagebrush (A nova), Three-tip Sagebrush (A triparta) and Silver Sagebrush (A cana). This component is nested within Shrub as a secondary component. Excludes the low stature prairie sage (A. frigida) and white sagebrush (A. ludoviciana).

Percent Bare Ground (2.74 GB)
The bare ground proportion in each 30m pixel..

Bare Ground is a continuous field component including exposed soil, sand and rocks.

Percent Herbaceous (2.39 GB)
The annual and perennial grass and forb proportion in each 30m pixel.

Herbaceous is a continuous field component consisting of grasses, forbs and cacti which were photosynthetically active at any point in the year of mapping

Percent Annual Herbaceous (0.95 GB)
The annual only grass and forb proportion in each in 30m pixel.

Annual Herbaceous is a continuous field component including grasses and forbs whose life history is complete in one growing season. This component is primarily dominated by annual invasive species including Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), Medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae), Red Brome (Bromus rebens), or annual mustards such as Tumble Mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum) and Tansy Mustard (Descurainia pinnata). But may contain substantial native annual herbaceous vegetation at higher elevations and in California. This component is nested within Herbaceous as a secondary component.

Percent Litter (2.07 GB)
The dead plant material proportion in each 30m pixel.

Litter is a continuous field component including dead standing woody vegetation, detached plant organic matter and biological soil crusts.

Percent Big Sagebrush (1.45 MB)
The proportion of big sagebrush canopy in each 30m pixel.

Big Sagebrush is a continuous field component dominated by Big Sagebrush (A tridentata spp.) may include Three-tip Sagebrush (A triparta) and Silver Sagebrush (A cana). This component is nested within Shrub and Sagebrush as a secondary component.

Shrub Height (3.37 GB)
Average height of shrubs in centimeters.

Shrub Height is the average height of all Shrub in centimeters. This component only occurs where the Shrub component has a prediction.

Sagebrush Height (1.94 GB)
Average height of sagebrush in centimeters.

Sagebrush Height is the average height of all Sagebrush in centimeters. This component only occurs where the Sagebrush component has a prediction.

RCMAP 1985-2023 Fractional Component Time-Series Now Available

The RCMAP product suite includes 10 components: annual herbaceous, bare ground, herbaceous, litter, non-sagebrush shrub, perennial herbaceous, sagebrush, shrub, tree, and shrub height. Data characterize the percentage of each 30-meter pixel in the Western United States covered by each component for each year from 1985-2023 - providing change information for 39 years. Because of file size limitations, individual years of component cover data are packaged in three time intervals including 1985-1996, 1997-2008, and 2009-2023. Perennial herb and non-sagebrush shrub are derivatives of herbaceous and annual herbaceous cover, and shrub and sagebrush cover, respectively.

NLCD 2021 Now Available

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in association with the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium, is pleased to announce the completion and release of the latest epoch of the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) for the conterminous U.S.—NLCD 2021. The MRLC, a consortium of federal agencies who coordinate and generate consistent and relevant land cover information at the national scale for a wide variety of environmental, land management, and modeling applications, have been providing the scientific community with detailed land cover products for more than 30 years. Over that time, NLCD has been one of the most widely used geospatial datasets in the U.S., serving as a basis for understanding the Nation’s landscapes in thousands of studies and applications, trusted by scientists, land managers, students, city planners, and many more as a definitive source of U.S. land cover.

Enhanced Visualization and Analysis (EVA) Tool Now Available

The MRLC Consortium, in collaboration with NOAA and the USGS, is pleased to release version 2 of the Enhanced Visualization and Analysis (EVA) tool. This tool provides users with detailed county statistics for any two NLCD landcover dates to support quick and powerful change analyses. This tool was originally developed by NOAA and shared through the consortium with custom adaptations for NLCD.
